First Grade

First Graders began the year learning to pat a steady beat while saying their names. Then they said their favorite food, favorite colors, and favorite animals while keeping the same steady beat. We discussed the difference between beat and rhythm and began learning how to read simple music rhythms: quarter notes, eighth notes and quarter rests. We have read together “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day” from this we add your rhythms. We are starting “Peanut Butter and Jelly”, another fun book with repeated phrases perfect for adding percussion. Once they master rhythms on non-pitched percussion, we move to our barred instruments in a pentatonic scale and play the rhythm of our names, of words in our books… of everything we can think of!
They have learned to clap or play (in a call response form), any rhythm I may throw up on the Smart board or clap to them!
